How To Clean Your Hot Tub Cover

Hot tub covers are an essential accessory for your hot tub. They can help prevent many water issues and keep your water free from debris. They also can help you to save energy by insulating your spa. Both indoor hot tubs and outdoor hot tubs can benefit from a cover. Though covers are great for many reasons, they can also become a problem if they aren’t maintained. Unmaintained covers will deteriorate quicker. You can tell a cover has become worn when it begins to peel, crack, or split. A part of taking care of your cover and preventing cracking and splitting is giving it a clean every now and then.

Step 1: Remove Your Cover

First, remove the hot tub cover from your spa. Removing your cover from your hot tub will make it easier to clean. Plus, you’ll be able to get to more difficult to reach areas. If you want to thoroughly clean your cover, this is an essential step.

Step 2: Rinse the Cover

Once the cover is completely off your tub, move it to a grassy area where it won’t get scratched up. Check for sharp rocks and sticks before laying it down on the grass. Once you find a good spot, begin rinsing the underside of the cover. While the underside of a hot tub cover isn’t going to be very dirty, it’s a good idea to remove some of the chemical build-up. You can use a hose or bucket to rinse your cover. After rinsing the underside, flip the cover over and rinse the top side.

Step 3: Clean the Top Side

There are many different hot tub cover cleaning solutions on the market. Check with your particular cover manufacturer to make sure you get the right product. Using the wrong product could damage your cover. A safe and cheap option for a homemade cover cleaning solution is a 3 parts water and 1 part vinegar solution. Once you have your solution ready, you can spray the surface of your cover. Once covered in solution, gently scrub the cover with an old rag or sponge.

Step 4: Rinse and Dry

Rinse the top of your cover to remove any cleaning solution. After you’re done rinsing, use a microfiber towel or an old t-shirt to dry your cover. Avoid using a rougher drying material as it could cause damage, such as scratches.

Step 5: Protect Your Cover

If you want your cover to last a long time and be protected from the sun’s rays, adding UV protection can extend its life. UV vinyl protection spray helps repel the damaging rays of the sun. These rays can cause your cover to crack and split over time. Make sure to apply UV protectant when your cover is completely dry.
